Cutting vinyl with your Silhouette Cameo, Silhouette SD and Cricut.

There are so many different kinds of vinyl! Yikes!

Whether you are using a Silhouette Cameo, a Silhouette SD or a Cricut, you will want to save this chart as a guide to which settings to use for which type of vinyl. Many thanks to Vinyl Expressions, for posting this chart to their website. I hope you find it useful.

  1. i can only find 12″ vinyl for my silhouette portrait. What should I cut it down to use in my portrait—8 1/2 inches or 9 inches, or does it make a difference? Have no idea what I am doing. Have signed up for a class in another month and so anxious to play. Thanks,Nancy

  2. I just bought the Cameo Silhouette. Can you tell me if you can use 12×12 sheets of vinyl instead of rolls and if so, do I need to put the vinyl on the cutting mat?

  3. Hi Gloria,
I tried cutting the wallpaper today, and it came out fabulous. I have always wanted a cutting machine because I have tons of wallpaper and I hated to throw it away. Stamping on it was fun, but I don’t stamp as much anymore. So, I recently ordered the Cameo. I was afraid of damaging the machine, but I figured if it can cut cardstock and other vinyls why not. I found your post by Googling Silhouette Cameo cutting. Anyway, I tried three different types of wallpaper. One was thicker with a texture on front, and a thick paper backing. I placed it on the sticky mat with the paper side up. The settings were B:2, S:10, T:30 It cut cleanly all the way through. I used a thicker Shelbourne wallpaper without a paper backing wallpaper side up at B:2, S:8, T:18, and finally Borden inc. solid vinyl wallpaper settings S:8, T:20, B:2. This opens up new ideas for me, Sometime next week I will be testing my textured Waverly and other thicker wallpapers.

    Glad I found your blog.

    • Hi! Thanks a million for coming back and sharing your wallpaper cutting experience with us. This is fabulous information for every Cameo owner. Perhaps you would consider send along some photos that I could feature on my blog in an article that would tell readers YOUR story. I know crafters would find it very useful and interesting.

One of my goals for Globug Ideas is to showcase what other crafters are doing, and how they do it. Let me know! I would be happy to write the article for your approval and then post it with your photos.

Thanks, again, for this great info!!

      • Sure Gloria, will you send me a private email to email you some photos. I will have to get back to you next week sometime.

  4. Hi,

What about wallpaper vinyls that have a paper backing? Just wondering. I also am new to Cameo Silhouette.

    • I haven’t tried wallpaper vinyls with paper backing, but I see absolutely no problem. You will likely have to use a slightly higher blade setting, but it should be fine. Let us all know if you try it.
      Gloria 🙂
